hangul Day is the special day that celebrates the most scientific writing system in the world.
Hello!
This time, I'll introduce you to a special day that Koreans are really proud of, Hangeul Day.
Hangeul Day is a day to commemorate the birth of Hangeul, Korea's unique alphabet and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every year, October 9th is designated as a public holiday, and many Koreans take time to reflect on the greatness of Hangeul.
1. What kind of day is Hangeul Day?
Hangeul Day commemorates the promulgation of 'Hunminjeongeum (Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People)' by King Sejong the Great, the 4th king of Joseon, for the people in 1446. Before that, Korea had no letters, and most of the people couldn't express their thoughts in writing. Therefore, King Sejong created Hunminjeongeum based on scientific principles so that anyone could easily learn and use it.
Hangeul is based on the principle of combining consonants and vowels to create sounds, so it is considered to be easier to learn and pronounce accurately than any other language. Because of this, Hangeul is recognized worldwide, so much so that UNESCO has established the 'King Sejong Literacy Prize' to recognize its contribution to the eradication of illiteracy.
2. Special events enjoyed on Hangeul Day
On Hangeul Day, various events are held across the country to reflect on the value of Hangeul. In Gwanghwamun Square, where the statue of King Sejong the Great is located, exhibitions and experience booths related to Hangeul are operated, and flash mobs on the theme of Hangeul are held on the streets. Calligraphers showcase beautiful Hangeul calligraphy, and people experience the beauty of Hangeul by writing handwritten letters.
Recently, design products and fashion items using Hangeul have gained great popularity among the younger generation. T-shirts, accessories, stationery, etc., made using the consonants and vowels of Hangeul, show that Hangeul can be reborn with a modern sense.
Korea community.
